Low Level Laser Therapy

Low level laser therapy is the application of visible (red and blue) and near infrared light to stimulate or inhibit biological processes. Laser therapy is a form of non-thermal therapy based on the photochemical processes by applying laser light to damaged soft tissue. These light energies are absorbed and transformed into biochemical energy to increase oxygen levels to injured cells. This cascade of events stimulates cells and boosts the body's natural healing ability by increasing blood flow, resulting in accelerated healing, improved tissue function and easing of pain. The result is reduced inflammation, pain relief, accelerated tissue regeneration and restoration of function within the tissue. Low level laser therapy does not generate heat and does not cause tissue damage or pain.

Key Effects of Low-Level Laser Therapy:

  • Anti-inflammatory: Low level laser therapy prevents the release of pro-inflammatory chemicals in the body, helping to reduce inflammation and manage conditions like arthritis and soft tissue injuries.
  • Accelerates Healing: It stimulates tissue repair by promoting the production of macrophages, fibroblasts, and lymphocytes cells essential for tissue healing and collagen synthesis. Low level laser therapy also promotes revascularization, enhancing the blood supply to wounds and speeding up recovery.
  • Pain Relief: By stimulating the body’s own opiates, nitric oxide, and serotonin, low-level laser therapy helps to reduce pain and discomfort offering relief for animals suffering from both chronic and acute pain.

At Pyramid Vet surgery, we incorporate low level laser therapy with our acupuncture sessions to treat varying conditions of pain and inflammation, improve range of motion and aid in post-operative healing.
